  1. Cobblestone-edged circle island of worn turf in a gravel motor court in Basking Ridge, New Jersey

    Step 01 — Site Assessment

A Tired Circle Island at the Center of the Motor Court

The cobblestone-edged circle island inside this Basking Ridge motor court had thinned out and lost its shape. We started with a walkthrough of the grade, drainage, and existing lawn to plan the rebuild before a single piece of equipment came off the truck.

  2. Sod cutter and rolled sod on a stripped circle island being regraded during a landscape renovation

    Step 02 — Sod Removal & Regrading

Stripping the Old Turf and Correcting the Crown

The existing turf was cut and rolled out with a sod cutter, then the soil was tilled, amended, and re-crowned so the island shed water evenly toward the gravel drive. Fresh sod rolls were staged around the perimeter as the bed was finished.

  3. Potted drift roses laid out on a mulched circle bed in front of a white colonial home before planting

    Step 03 — Planting Layout

Setting the Rose Bed Before Anything Goes in the Ground

Drift roses were laid out in their containers and spaced by hand so the mature spread would read as one continuous mass from the front door and from the street. Bed lines were cut clean and the mulch depth set before planting began.

  4. Newly planted drift rose bed surrounded by fresh sod inside cobblestone edging under a blue sky

    Step 04 — Installation

Roses Planted, Sod Laid, Edges Defined

Each rose was set at finish grade, backfilled with amended soil, and watered in. The new sod was knitted tight to the cobblestone edging so the ring of lawn framing the bed stayed crisp and mowable.

  5. Established drift rose mound in full bloom on a circle island backed by mature spruce trees

    Step 05 — Establishment & Care

First-Season Growth Under a Maintenance Program

Through the first season the island was mowed, edged, deadheaded, and fertilized on our recurring maintenance schedule. The roses filled the bed completely and the sod matured into dense, uniform turf.

  6. Finished rose circle island and manicured lawn framing the bluestone entry walk of a Basking Ridge estate

Step 06 — The Finished Property

The Arrival View, Reworked End to End

The finished circle island now anchors the entry sequence, tying into the rose borders, clipped hedges, and bluestone walk that lead to the front door — all maintained by Fortress Landscaping.
